Get Started with Git in Five Minutes

Hi,

Fear Git? Fear no more.

If you have five minutes and Linux Mint or Ubuntu or another Debian-based Linux, you can try Git now. Once you git, you never go back.

Install


sudo apt-get install git
sudo apt-get install meld
sudo apt-get install nano


Configure


git config --global user.name "Your Name"
git config --global user.email email@example.com
git config --global core.editor "nano"
git config --global merge.tool meld


Create First Repository

cd ~
mkdir ./projects
cd projects
mkdir ./test
cd test
touch testfile
git add .
git status
git commit -m "Initial commit of test file for tutorial!"

Signup for Bitbucket for free private git repos and push repo to Bitbucket
Signup for Github and push useful piece of open source code to your profile
Change core.editor and merge.tool to your favourite editors like Sublime3 or KDiff
